| Florianópolis - Boi de Mamão |
Boi de Mamão |
Very traditional in Santa Catarina, “boi-de-mamão” is the celebration known as
“boi-bumbá” or “bumba-meu-boi” in other regions of Brazil. According to the legend, the dance, in Florianópolis, earned a different name because
they were so late in the manufacturing of the clothes, that there was no time left to make the head of the animal, which was substituted by a
green papaya.
The ox is made with a wooden and bamboo frame, covered with colored cloths and
papers. The head has nothing to do with the papaya used formerly, but keeps the name in the middle of singings and publics of all ages, beginning
before the Christmas and extending up to Carnaval. |
