| Florianópolis - Pau de Fita |
Pau-de-fita |
From a mix of portuguese, german and spanish origins, the dance “pau-de-fita” is
also known as “jardineira” and “dança dos arcos e flores”. Very common among children, the beautiful manifestation of Santa Catarina’s folklore
is present in the main typical celebrations of Florianópolis.
Eight couples dance, interlacing colored stripes tied in the top of a mast. After
the colorful interlacing, the couples have to undo the laces without making any mistakes, in the middle of singings and curious looks, attracted
by typical songs and by the beauty of the visual spectacle made in a public square.
There are those who say that the dance is a metaphor that shows a tree, since the
mast is prepared with the stripes, like a tree has its plantation prepared by farmers. The snare of stripes symbolizes the roots and, at the end,
the mast takes the shape of a tree full of fruits. |
