Idealized by engineer Manuel Castro de Gouveia in the middle of the 50’s, the
building of “Antiga Cadeia Pública” (Old Public Jail) was deactivated due to the construction of “Instituto Penal Paulo Sarasate”, a few years
later. The building of neoclassical lines was reformed and became “Centro de Turismo de Fortaleza”, HQ of Emcetur - Empresa Cearense de
Turismo.
Besides receiving tourists and giving local information for travelers, the center
also hosts the commerce of craftsmanship and local typical goods. The cages serve as stands, offering space for artisans to display their pieces
and, in the pavilion, there are cultural spaces: “Museu de Arte Popular” and “Museu de Mineralogia”.
