Estoril |
Estoril is one of the historic buildings of Fortaleza that pictures the epoch in
which Brazil sheltered some American soldiers during WW 2nd. Also known as the concretization of a project of José Magalhães Porto, “Estoril”
was transformed into a casino, which sheltered not only the soldiers but also, the famous "Coca-Colas", daughters of traditional
families who accompanied the americans. According to history, those ladies were the only ones with the privilege of drinking the famous soft
drink brought by the foreigners.
By the end of the war, the place started to receive leaders of several politic and
ideological segments, what made the building a target for the militaries of the dictatorship era. Many years later, the place was bought by
Fortaleza’s City Hall, which transforming “Estoril” into a cultural center to host meetings, debates, lectures and shows. Actually the building
is managed by Fundação de Cultura, Esporte e Turismo de Fortaleza – Funcet.
