Matriz de Santana Church |
Matriz de Santana Church started to be built in 1743 by order of Manoel Antunes
da Fonseca, in the place of the local old chapel. The new construction had the objective of reaching a size proportional to the population of
“Cidade de Goiás”, which was growing according to the development of the location.
The project took exaggerated proportions, since Fonseca wanted the church to be 3
times bigger than the cathedral of Rio de Janeiro. With this, the work was made in precarious safety conditions and, in 1759, the ceiling
crumbled, obliging the population to pay for the restoration of the building. “Igreja Matriz de Santana” became a cathedral in 1958 and today
is completely restored.
