Today’s Foz do Iguaçu Matriz Church doesn’t holds any vestiges of the original
building. The works of the first cathedral had begun in 1922 and only one and a half year later, the church was inaugurated. However, in 1925,
the sanctuary was destroyed during Semana Santa by fireworks that hit the roof. In a matter of minutes, everything was on fire.
A month after the tragedy, the works of the actual Matriz church began, very
slowly. In 1940, the major chapel was finished. Ten years later, the nave and the tower were concluded and, subsequently, the laterals were
reformed and restored. After several interruptions in the project progress, Matriz church was finally finished in 1978.
