Iguassu Falls - Itaipu Dam - Itaipu Lake

Many waterfalls and productive areas were covered with the creation of the lake, responsible for feeding the Itaipu Dam. The largest loss of the nature was caused by the destruction of the Sete Quedas, a group of waterfalls formed by the shrinking of the Paraná river that went from 4 kms of rxtension to only 200 meters in width in a land that was extremely irregular.

Today, the Paraná river that is narrow also, but in order to penetrate the reservoir. With almost 1,5 km2, the lake was formed in 1982 with the revolting water of the Paraná´river. It is 22 meters deep but reaches 170 meters near the dam.

In spite of the priceless to nature, the region had a surprinsing economical growth with the construction of the dam. On the margins of the river, clubs, artificial beaches, parks and environmental reservations were installed. There is a great concern with the quality of the water of the lake and the plant has a program to test the water of the Paraná river and of its tributaries.

The Itaipu lake is the lake that has the largest number of fish in all the region of the Basin of the Paraná river. Today, the reservoir has 189 species. Fishing is a very developed activity in the region but there are technicians that orient the fishermen and follow the growth of the species in the lake to maintain the environmental equilibrium.
