The Legend of the Waterfalls
The daughter of the chief of the Caigangues Indians, the beautiful Naipi, was
the loveliest girl of the tribe. Due to her beauty, her father decided to offer her as a present to the Deus M'Boy (M'Boy God), the son of
Tupã in form of a snake. However, a warrior of the tribe called Tarobá won the love of Naipi and, on the day of the ritual of the consecration,
the lovers fled in a canoe.
The Deus M'Boy got furious when he discoved that the lovers had fled and decided
to avenge himself. He dived into the earth and spun his body in order to open up a large fissure in the river which gave place to the
waterfalls. The current of the river pulled the canoe of the lovers to the crater that fell and disappeared, Naipi was transformed into a rock
that is mistreated by the water for all eternity and Tarobá was transformed into a palmtree that grows at the top of the cave where the jealous
God guards the two lovers.
