The construction of the friendship bridge was the first big step in improving the
link between Brazil and Paraguay. On the 29th May 1956 the 2 countries signed an agreement to build a bridge across the river Paraná, which was
going to be named friendship bridge = Ponte de Amizade.
The Brazilian President Castelo Branco and the Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner inaugurated the bridge on the 27th May 1965.
