| Iguassu Falls - Itaipu Dam - Itaipu Dam |
The Usina Hidrelétrica de Itaipu is the world's largest hydroeletric works. It was
built together with Paraguay and is responsible for 80% of the eletricity produced in the country. Daily, around 2 thousand tourists circulate
in the the place, the reason why it was made the Visitor's Reception Center, with shops, restaurants and a parking lot for buses.
Considered to be one of the wonders of engineering of the modern world, the
number of the Dam are really impressing. The concrete used in this dam is equivalent to 210 Maracanã Stadiums and the steel used could build
380 towers of the same size as the Eiffel Tower, in France. The reservoir is 170 km long and when the drain is open, the volume of water
surpasses the volume of water that is released by the Iguaçu Waterfalls.
The place is part of the Itaipu Touristic Complex that includes the Refúgio
Biológico Bela Vista (Bela Vista Biological Sanctuary), the Piracema Park and the Illuminated Monument of the Dam. The reservoir of Itaipu also
has the Piracema channel where the migrating fish overcome the 120 meter drop between the Paraná river and the reservoir to reach the breeding
places.
The tourists that visit the Dam can choose two types of excursions. In the Vista
Turística, there is a stop at the Mirante do Vertedouro and another stop at the Mirante Central, besides an exhibition of a documentary on
Itaipu. The excursion last an hour and a half and it is not necessary to schedule your visit.
Now, the Visita Especial, the tourist should schedule a day to visit the dam and
the groups have at least 12 people. There are three stops: the first stop is at the Mirante do Vertedouro, the second is at the Mirante Central
and the third stop is at the Edifício da Produção. The excursion lasts 2 hours. Another interesting outing is the show of lights which is held
at night.
