Ilhéus - Historical Buildings - Bataclã

In Ilhéus, Bataclã is the synonym of bohemia. The cabaret was the principal night attraction for years. with the presentation of dance companies coming from all over the country and even from abroad. The principal clients of the Bataclã were the cacao landowners who frequented the place to play poker and watch the shows.

In the 20's, when the cacao farmers lived the peak of the economical growth, there were two shows per night in the night club. However, when gambling was prohibited in Brazil, the cabaret practically went bankrupt because it was impossible to maintain the place just with the shows and the sale of drunks.

The Bataclã was immortalized with the novel "Gabriela, Cravo e Canela", by Jorge Amado, one of the most illustrious Ilhenses. At present, the old brothel is being restored and soon will be used as a Cultural Center of the city.
