Ilhéus - Historical Buildings - Jorge Amado's Cultural House

The residence where Jorge Amado spent his childhood is today, a Cultural House which carries the name of the writer. It is one of the principal attractions of the city and is the place where the tourist can get to know a bit more about the life of the writer and his family.

The land was bought by colonel João Amado, Jorge's father, in the beginning of the 20's, when the house began to be built. The construction of the small palace was only finished in 1926. The floor is still the original one, all in Jacarandá wood. The tiles are in the art nouveu style in English ceramic.

This is where Jorge Amado wrote his first novel "O País do Carnaval" (The Country of the Carnival). After the family moved to Rio de Janeiro, the house was used as the Faculdade de Direito de Ilheus. Today, the Casa de Cultura Jorge Amado is the headquarters of the Fundação Cultural de Ilhéus.
