| Ilhéus - Churches - Cathedral of São Sebastião |
The Cathedral of São Sebastião is, without doubts the most magnificent monument
of Ilhéus. It began to be built in 1931 when the cacao farmers lived the peak of development. The monument was only finished more than 30 years
later in 1967.
Located in a noble region of Ilhéus an the center border of the city, the
Cathedral occupied the place of a small secular church in honor of the same saint. The small church was demolished in order to build the
Cathedral.
In the indicial phase of the construction, there were various misunderstanding
regarding the architecture of the Cathedral because everyone wanted something really splendid.
The plant was finished and today it is possible to admire the beauty a temple in
neoclassic style, with artistic stained-glass windows, Greek columns and Roman arches.
One of the idealists of the Cathedral was the Bishop Dom Eduardo Herbenhold, who
had his remains burred in a mausoleum located in the Cathedral. Besides the cacao producers, the money used in the Cathedral came from abroad
and from collections of the worshippers. |
