| João Pessoa - Church - Santo Antônio Convent |
The convent is considered one of the best constructions among the Franciscans
schools of that time. It was built in 1588, year when Friar Melchior arrived at Paraíba, coming from Santa Catarina, to found a temple of the
Franciscan Order. The work was interdicted in 1599 due to a dispute of politic power, what obliged the Order’s devotees to move away for some
time. A few time after that, there was the Dutch invasion, almost completely destroying the building, which was used as a military post,
expelling the friars once more.
The building had a strategic location to the militaries, therefore the interest.
The location allowed total control over “vale do Sanhoá” up to Cabedelo River. When the conflict was over and the Portuguese reestablished the
order, the convent was restored, having its works concluded in 1661, when another works for the church began.
