Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church |
The Carmelite Order was pursued during the time of the Dutch invasion, so, many
documents were lost, once they were buried by the devotees. Because of this, many details of the construction history, dated from 1592, were
erased.
The Carmelites also built Santa Tereza Church, by demand of Dom Henrique, in 1580,
and the attachment chapel of Santa Tereza de Jesus Church. Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church has baroque traces and a nave that impresses for having
flowers sculpted in limestone. In the same place there’s also a shield and a panel with the initials of Nossa Senhora do Carmo and the symbol
shield of the Carmelites.
