Campina Grande is a city situated in the boundary between “Agreste” and “Sertão”,
120km away from João Pessoa. It’s well known for promoting yearly the greatest “Festa de São João” of Brazil, besides “Micarande”, a carnival
out of time that integrates the calendar of Embratur.
Visitors have some options of low-cost lodging, besides a pleasant weather, not as
warm as Recife. The city has two University campuses and is the seat of several events related to technology during the year, since Campina
Grande is considered as one of the greatest technological centers of the region.
Besides that, one of the main concerns of Campina Grande is to keep the traditions
of Paraíba and the regional identity alive, so they can be passed to the next generations. From “June Celebrations” to shepherd traditions,
passing through folk dances and local craftsmanship, the most varied habits are preserved with tenacity by the local residents.
One of the strongest local marks is the quantity of musical talents, found in
“repentistas” (a guitar player from the Northeast region of Brazil) and popular poets, and even great names as Luiz Gonzaga, Jackson do Pandeiro
and Elba Ramalho. This part of Campina Grande’s culture is preserved by means of radio stations and parties like the traditional
"Vaquejadas", which gather innumerous people. |
