Each step of the ritual is programmed and divulged beforehand to residents, who
organize the preparative at the local churches. Everything starts with a procession, which departs from “Igreja do Carmo” and goes towards
Mosteiro de São Bento. The next day, there’s procession of Encontro, where the image of “Nosso Senhor” goes to Mosteiro de São Bento to meet the
image of “Nossa Senhora”, coming from “Igreja do Carmo”.
On the following days, each one with an event, the story gets developed. One of
the events is “Missa de Ramos”, which counts with another procession from Igreja do Carmo towards Catedral, for the celebration of “Santa Missa”.
After that, there’s “Canto das Trevas”. Almost in the end of “Semana Santa” there are “Celebração Eucarística do Santo Crisma”, “Celebração
Eucarística da Ceia do Senhor” and “Lava-pés”.
On Sexta-feira Santa (Holy Friday), visitors can watch “Via Sacra” and “Celebração
da Paixão de Cristo” at Igreja São Francisco, where a new procession starts. To end the celebrations, during Sábado de Aleluia (Hallelujah
Saturday) there one last procession, this time towards Catedral, so “Celebração Eucarística do Senhor Jesus” can happen. On Sunday, there’s
Solene Celebração Eucarística” at Catedral and at Mosteiro de São Bento, this one with the presence of Archbishop Dom Marcelo Carvalheira.
Every year a theme for the celebration is chosen, which most times are used to
