The occupation of the mountain region of Santa Catarina started at the fields of
Lages, since 1750. Correia Pinto founded a small settlement in 1766, which had “Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres” as patron saint. The place served as
meeting point of cattle drivers who took the cattle from Rio Grande do Sul to São Paulo and had to stop there to rest.
With the creation of the settlement, the region also got more protected against
invaders and offered more security to the cattle drivers. A few years later, in 1771, Lajes is now considered as a village and, in 1820, it’s
not part of “Capitania de São Paulo” anymore, now belonging to Santa Catarina. The village was elevated to the category of city in 1860,
adopting the name “Campos de Lajens”, due to the large amount of “Pedra Laje” in the region.
Only from the decade of 1960, through an edict signed by mayor Vidal Ramos Júnior,
the city adopts the name of Lages. |
