| Manaus - Others - Municipal Market |
Manaus was the most modern city of the country when the rubber exploitation was
in its peak. Besides the electric lights, streetcars and other services, more important buildings were constructed, like the Municipal Theater
and the Custom’s Building. With the urban growth came the necessity of a place to commercialize food.
Then, in 1883, the Adolfo Lisboa Municipal Market was inaugurated, a perfect
replica of the Paris “Les Halles” market. Located in the at the margins of the Negro River, the market is a great storage shed made of iron,
with lateral rooms made of masonry. In 1890, another two warehouses with the same size were built and, in contrary to the first one, only iron,
and no bricks, were used.
Between 1906 and 1934, the Municipal Market was under responsibility of the
English company Manáos Markets, which leased the place. Since the 30’s, the Manaus City Hall has administrated it.
