Since 1850, when Amazonas was raised to the status of State, navigation with
steamboats in the Amazon River and its affluent was authorized. Five decades later, the region lived the prosperity granted by the investments
in the rubber extraction.
That’s when the renovation of the old Manaus Harbor became extremely necessary.
Although the docks were able to receive some embarkations, there wasn’t any infrastructure to stock the quantity of merchandise that circled
at that time.
The work lasted approximately five years and the harbor was inaugurated again in
1907. Built at the margins of Negro River, the Harbor has a floating dock that goes along with the water level, even in the flood epochs. It
also has structure to dock big scale ships. Since its very beginning up to nowadays, the Manaus Harbor is an important place of tourists from
all over the world and merchandise circulation.
All of the buildings in the Manaus Harbor were registered in 1987, which includes
the building of São Vicente Isle (Rua Bernardo Ramos), the central office (Rua Taqueirinha), the building that runs the Legislative Congress
annex (Rua Governador Vitório) and the old building of the Treasury (Rua Maurício de Souza). Three registered edifications are older than the
reform: the Treasury building, whose facade has inscriptions dated from 1890, the “Trapiche de 15 de Novembro (November 15th
Trapiche’s)”, from 1888 and the “Bomba de Incêndio (Fire Pump)”, from 1881.
Besides the secular constructions of the Manaus Harbor, the tourists can also
visit the Harbor Museum that has a patrimony that includes old documents and other relics. |
