| Manaus - Others - Rio Negro Palace |
The Rio Negro Palace is one of the symbols of the Manaus aristocracy, considered
one of the richest cities of Brazil by the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The barons of the rubber
dreamed of transforming Manaus in a replica of European cities and exhibited their own fortune in the architecture of their mansions.
With this purpose, the Rio Negro Palace was built to serve as residence to the
rubber merchant Waldemar Scholtz. In 1911, the building was hypothecated, since Scholtz couldn’t pay the remaining debts, due to the decreasing
of foreign investment and, in 1914, with the start of the World War 1st, the money completely exhausted.
State Government then leased the real property and transformed the place in the
State’s administrative office and governor residence. Only in 1918, when the State bought the property, the place started to be called as Rio
Negro Palace. And really, it looks like a real mini castle.
The well-cared garden, adorned with bronze statues and blended iron lights,
preserves the luxurious style of that epoch. The facade follows the classic style, with arc shaped entrance doors, full of details. The floor is
made of acapu and pau-amarelo and most of the furniture is imported. On the 2nd floor, after climbing a secular carved wood stairway,
there is a balcony with a view to the city.
The building was registered as stats historic patrimony in 1980. Since 1997, a
Cultural Center runs there.
