Manaus - Churches - Metropolitan Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral, popularly known as Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, was inaugurated in 1856, right after Manaus’s foundation. It was built in the honor of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, who is the Amazonas State patron saint.

The Carmelite missionaries built the Metropolitan Cathedral. After some years, it was reconstructed by the province’s president, Manoel da Gama Lobo D'Almada, but was totally destroyed by fire.

The building where the cathedral is actually situated was built in 1878 and is located in front of the Manaus’s harbor. Inside the church there is a gorgeous tomb, where the remains of Dom Lourenço Costa Aguiar, bishop during the city’s foundation time, are being kept. The Matriz Church has a neoclassical style formed with constructions and simple decoration.
