Mariana - Churches - Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church

Built at Furquim district, in the end of the 18th century, Nossa Senhora do Carmo Chapel had simple architecture and presented a side signaler from the 18th century. It keeps a nice patrimony of great artists like Francisco Xavier Carneiro and Francisco Machado Luz, enriching the precinct historic and cultural value even more.

The building passed through a fire in 1999, leaving intact only the major altar and the building’s front. In the incident time, the pieces were as gathered and transfered to Museu de Arte Sacra de Mariana (Mariana’s Sacred Arts Museum), where they passed through a restoration process.

The church is protected by IPHAN.
