Mina da Passagem

Mina da Passagem is an obligatory point for Mariana’s visitors. Considered as the biggest gold mine of the region, its exploration begun in 1819 and still has the machinery used in the beginning of its operations.

For those who wishes to take a closer look, they just have to go down 120 meters deep until arrive to the underground galleries, with temperatures varying from 17ºC to 20ºC. There’s a natural lake in the bottom of the mine and the water is in an intense blue tone, acquired due to the contact of cooper sulfate. It’s allowed the practice of professional scuba diving in the lake.

During the period when it was explored, approximately 35 tons of gold were extracted by England and Portugal.
