Mariana - Churches - Sé Basilica Cathedral

Catedral Basílica da Sé

Sé Basilica Cathedral

With Nossa Senhora da Assunção as patron saint, Sé Basilica Cathedral took about 50 years to be finished. It was built by baroque artists, Manoel Francisco Lisboa, Aleijadinho’s father, as one of them, and inaugurated in 1760.

The church was made in mud walls and wood. The altars are made of wood and covered with tarnished gold. The washing room and wind breaker of the sacristy are Aleijadinho’s works. The image of Nossa Senhora do Carmo has an original portuguese cape, embroidered with gold. The paintings authors are Manoel Rabelo de Souza and Mestre Athaíde, the most famous brazilian painter of the baroque era.

One of the greatest attractions of the church is the german organ donated by Dom João V in 1751, played in the Friday and Sunday masses. The crystal chandeliers enchant tourists.
