Mariana |
As well as any other city from Minas Gerais country side, Mariana has a priceless
architectonical set of historic importance. Erected in the colony time, the houses and imposing churches recall the memories of when the gold in
the region was abundant.
Today, there’s no more gold, but the mines and historic buildings are equally
valuable for tourists and for the preservation of the national history. And, due to the gold exploration, the small city developed the art and
craftsmanship production. Manuel Francisco Lisboa, Mestre Athaíde and Aleijadinho, among so many others, are just examples of the artists who
developed the baroque style in Minas Gerais, which is found in the buildings architecture, paintings and religious images carved in wood or
soapstone.
Mariana is an excellent alternative for tourists who don’t enjoy agitation and
wish to know the historic cities of Minas Gerais. It is calm if compared to neighbor locations and is only 12km away from Ouro Preto.
A wonderful attraction is “Mina da Passagem” 5km away from downtown. There’s also
the organ of Catedral Basílica da Sé, donated by Dom João V. There’s only one instrument like this, actually in Faro, Portugal.
But Mariana, the first capital of Minas Gerais doesn’t live only with the past.
Around the city, the woods are preserved. Innumerous fountains proportionate good moments for tourists who enjoy adventure and radical sports,
like trekking and mountain bike.
