Rua Chile |
Rua Chile was formerly called as “Rua da Alfândega e do Comércio”. It was the
main way in Ribeira District in the 19th century. As time passed, a commercial center gained form, with buildings constructed with
stone and cal destined to shelter warehouses.
The visit to the street is an obligatory stop, since it concentrates great part
of houses with high historic value, even due to the economic development of the region. In the district there’s the building that hosts the
Government Palace, which hosted the consort of Princesa Isabel. Walking a few meters, visitors can find “Casa de Câmara Cascudo”, which today
works as a kind of cultural center with many art works. |
