Inaugurated in 1902, Rio Grande do Norte Historic and Geographic Institute” was
created to preserve the history of the city, working as an important research center. It has the function of document the urban development and
keeps a file with documents about the first constructions and also details that constitute the evolution of the buildings of the city.
The collection of "Historic and Geographic Institute" counts with old
and valuable pieces for the culture and art of Natal. Notoriety for “pia batismal” of the first church of the city, a safe dated from the
18th century, the old “pelourinho” of 1732, which is a log where slaves were punished, and a series of edicts about the laws of the
Republic Proclamation. The building, of neoclassic style, also counts with several works of Câmara Cascudo, including the mortuary mask
collected five hours after his death.
