Casa de Câmara e Cadeia of Ouro Preto |
The building construction begun in 1784, but it was interrupted several times,
that’s why it was finished only in 1846. It also served as councilmen chamber.
The jail started its operation in the occasion of the building’s inauguration.
Now, the councilmen chamber was installed in 1836. Some aspects of the construction were changed later, for example, the balcony’s facade and
the balustrades, which were originally made of stone and were exchanged for iron.
As working force, afro-brazilians, prisoners and vagabonds were recruited,
obliged to go under involuntary work. This happening inspired a poet, who used the nickname “Critilo”, to satirize the government with a work
named "Cartas Chilenas", where he made a politic satire.
Years later, the place started to house a museum that has a patrimony of several
pieces about the culture of Minas Gerais. There can be found documents about “Inconfidência Mineira”, besides the mortal remains of several
conspirers. The space keeps an auditorium and a room, baptized as “Manuel de Ataíde”, to host temporary exhibits.
