Building constructed in colonial style, Casa dos Contos was erected between 1772
and 1784 to serve as residence to João Rodrigues de Macedo, a tax collector of Minas Gerais at that time. It also served as jail in the ground
floor, rented to comport the conspirers, among them the poet Cláudio Manoel da Costa, Álvares Maciel, Luiz Vieira da Silva and Priest Rolim,
important figures of Minas Gerais history.
Later, the building became the seat of the commission of Real Fazenda, when it
got the name of “Casa dos Contos”, also housing “Casa de Fundição”. When visiting the building, it’s possible to know better various elements
of that time, like gold pieces and the foundry, besides paintings from the 18th century. It also exposes “senzalas” (slave
dormitories) in the basement and the room under the stairway, which served as jail.
Nowadays, the place is the seat of several organizations, like “Centro de
Estudos do Ciclo do Ouro”, “Museu da Moeda e do Fisco” and “Agência da Receita Federal de Ouro Preto”.
