Ouro Preto - Church - Padre Faria Chapel

Padre Faria Chapel

Padre Faria Chapel

The chapel, also known as Nossa Senhora do Rosário, was built in the beginning of the 18th century by Padre João de Faria. It became known by housing all people, africans and caucasians, men and women. As time passed, though, distinct communities were formed and the black devotees got separated from the others.

The chapel has a pontiff cross with three arms, which, according to scholars, means the approval of Pope Pio VI to this division. It’s the only specimen of this kind in Minas Gerais.
