São João Batista Chapel |
It’s the oldest chapel in Ouro Preto, built in 1698 by the first residents of
the region who accompanied explorer Antonio Dias. The story says that the chapel was inaugurated during a mass conducted by Padre
Faria.
It has wooden doors and choir, besides a low wall, rustic Bell and round central
window. It also has an ivory crucifix donated by a member of Visitadores Ordinários do Rio de Janeiro. Nowadays, the artifact can be found at
Museum of Aleijadinho, in Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Antonio Dias Matrix.
São João Batista Chapel calls attention due to the careful carpentry work and
the paintings which occupy the "retábulo", representing the twelve apostles.
