The construction is dated from 1742, when it carried only the name of Bom Jesus
dos Perdões. In 1760, it was donated to the community of Nossa Senhora das Mercês. With time came the junction of the names, transforming it
to Nossa Senhora das Mercês e Perdões Church.
Nossa Senhora das Mercês e Perdões Church presents a curiosity to visitors right
in the entrance. The building façade faces Pico do Itacolomi, with its back turned to São Francisco de Assis Chapel. It housed devotees of any
colors but africans. It encouraged the presence of women on the masses, in opposition to the portuguese traditions.
