Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo |
One of the prettiest churches of Ouro Preto, Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church
belongs to Ordem Terceira do Carmo and was erected in 1766, where there was a chapel for the devotees of Santa Quitéria. It was one of the
last works of Manuel Francisco Lisboa, Aleijadinho’s father, who idealized the blueprint of the sanctuary. The sacristy washbasin, the altars
of Nossa Senhora da Piedade and Cristo Amarrado are works of Aleijadinho.
The building passed for a fire in 1999, which damaged some of the relics kept
for years. Today, the pieces are under the cares of Museu de Artes Sacras de Mariana (Museum of Sacred Arts of Mariana), duly identified. The
church is protected by IPHAN. It’s located in Morro de Santa Quitéria, between Ouro Preto and Antonio Dias.
