São Francisco de Paula Church |
The church was erected between 1804 and 1898 and is considered the most recent
building of Ouro Preto, keeping the same characteristics since the date of its construction, through the hands of Francisco Machado da Cruz. It
was erected to comport a great number of devotees, since in the old building, Nossa Senhora da Piedade Church, the space was not enough. Its
location allows a panoramic view to the city.
The building presents characteristics of the 18th century and, according
to registers of Iphan, the major chapel took more than 30 years to be finished. It has six altars with images of saints like Nossa Senhora da
Conceição, São Miguel, Santo Antônio, São Geraldo, São Francisco de Sales, Nossa Senhora da Consolação, São Geraldo, São Francisco de Assis and
Santa Mônica. But the major attraction is the image of São Francisco de Paula, made by Aleijadinho. This sculpture is registered as private
patrimony by IPHAN.
There’s also emphasis for the four stone statues that ornament the
stairways.
