Nossa Senhora do Pilar Matrix Church was inaugurated, with great pomp, in 1733.
At that time, Minas Gerais was on the peak of the gold exploration and the church showed some of the richness found on the soil. Gems, silver
and more than 400kg of gold were used in the temple decoration.
There are panels in the wall of the major chapel which represents the four
evangelists, the seasons of the year and the last supper. There, also runs the Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Arts), which exhibits
sculptures and silver objects.
