Itacolomi Peak

Itacolomi Peak

Itacolomi Peak was a reference point for explorers who arrived to the country side of Minas Gerais searching for gold during the 17th century. In tupi (brazilian Indian language) it means "a pedra e o menino" (the stone and the boy), since there are a small stone next to the bigger one.

It’s located at Parque Estadual do Itacolomi, where there are river springs and dense vegetation. Several animal species live in the place, some of them in extinction danger. Visitors walk through trails accompanied by guides, besides getting to know Museu do Chá and Casa Bandeirista.

One of the most interesting trails is Trilha do Forno, which pass through the ruins of an old mud oven. One of the tracks was especially developed for children. It’s light and the monitors have many pedagogic activities during the way, with the objective of stimulate nature preservation.

It’s important to be always accompanied by a guide.
