Itacolomi Peak |
Itacolomi Peak was a reference point for explorers who arrived to the country
side of Minas Gerais searching for gold during the 17th century. In tupi (brazilian Indian language) it means "a pedra e o
menino" (the stone and the boy), since there are a small stone next to the bigger one.
It’s located at Parque Estadual do Itacolomi, where there are river springs and
dense vegetation. Several animal species live in the place, some of them in extinction danger. Visitors walk through trails accompanied by
guides, besides getting to know Museu do Chá and Casa Bandeirista.
One of the most interesting trails is Trilha do Forno, which pass through the
ruins of an old mud oven. One of the tracks was especially developed for children. It’s light and the monitors have many pedagogic activities
during the way, with the objective of stimulate nature preservation.
It’s important to be always accompanied by a guide.
