Ouro Preto - Chico Rei Mine

Chico Rei Mine

Chico Rei Mine

Chico Rei Mine has innumerous corridors excavated in the ground. It is 80 km² distributed in five floors.

In the beginning, the mine belonged to a portuguese family, the owners of slave Chico Rei. The slave arrived in Brazil in 1740, when he was bought by Major Augusto Góes to work in the gold exploration. He received this name because he was a king of an African tribe. Years later, he bought his own freedom and the mine where he worked.

With the money he got from the place, he helped in the construction of Santa Efigênia Church, besides freeing other slaves.
