The Guaiba river cuts the city of Porto Alegre. Its mouth forms an archipelago
made up by 28 island, representing one of the principal postcards of the city. Along the 72 Km of the border, the porto alegrenses are used to
watching spectacles of lights and colors that are formed on the mirror of water of the river during the sunset. The Guaiba river receives the
water from the Jacuí, Sinos and Gravataí rivers. In 1976, the State Park of Delta do Jacuí was created in the islands that form the archipelago.
It is an archipelago made up by 28 island practically uninhabited by human beings. On the other hand, 329 plant species can be found on the
island, besides 30 species of first and hundreds of other animal, between mammals and reptiles. Some of the islands are connected to the
continent by the Rio Guaíba bridge. These islands are inhabited and have a population of around 15 thousand people that live off the recycling
of trash and fishing. They are the islands of Grandes dos Marinheiros, Pavão, Flores and Pintada. The production of handicraft is also intense
in this place.
