Recife - Museums - Culture House

In 1848, the government of the Pernambuco Province decided to build a new jail for the city of Recife and the engineer Mamede Alves Ferreira (1820-1862) was the responsible to elaborate the project.
In March 15, 1973, the Recife jail was closed by the governor Eraldo Gueiros Leite, and the prisoners were transfered to others jails, specially to the Itamaracá Agricultural Jail.
The idea of changing this old Jail House in a Culture House was from the plastic artist Francisco Brennand.
He wanted to create in Pernambuco a similar institution to the education centers in the fields of literature, theater, music and plastic arts, which were being created in French by the writer André Malraux.
The inauguration was in April 14,1976. Nowadays, the place is a center of regional culture and obligatory touristic point of the city. Its old cells are occupied with craftwork stores, bookstore and snack bar.

Address: Rua Floriano Peixoto, no number - Santo Antonio.
