In the beginning of the 60 years the old eclesiastical jail of the colonial period was restored by the Nacional Artistic and
Historical Property Institute (Iphan) to hold an art exhibition donated by Assis Chateaubriand. The museum has about 2.800
collection of pieces.
Besides the "Assis Chateaubriand" collection, the museum has 204 work of art of different technique and authors such
as Cândido Portinari, Francisco Brennand, Telles Júnior, Ladjane Bandeira. There is also the "Abelardo Rodrigues"
collection, including 923 works, 109 correspondences, 68 pictures and 106 printeds, acquired by the State governor in 1984.
