| Recife - Cultural Centers - Malakoff Tower |
The Malakoff Tower, imposing gateway to the city
of Recife, was built in 1855, but was only reopened to the public early last year. This construction, whose curious tittle is
a tribute to the brave defense by Russian soldiers of a tower of this name during the Crimean War, today holds the Malakoff
Cultural Observatory. The Observatory serves as a venue for shows, exhibitions, work-shops, lectures and debates, and provides
free access to computers, but it is necessary to book in advance. Visitors can choose between the computers in the Virtual
Library or those in the Infoculture Room. The observatory also holds the second largest comic-book collection in the country
with about fifteen thousand comics, including, a number of rare collectors items. In the top floor and the dome of the tower,
the space is dedicated to astronomy.
