| Rio de Janeiro - Typical Food |
Like another big city, Rio de Janeiro has from luxurious restaurants with
international quality culinary until small places, where the most traditional food of the brazilian culinary is served.
However, the carioca feijoada is a unanimity and is with doubt, one of the
most traditional dishes of Brazil. There is nothing more carioca than eating a traditional dish, symbol of the brazilian gastronomy in one
of the seaside restaurants.
Feijoada has its origin in the colonial period and was created through the
mixture of european, african and indian eating habits. The land owners cooked black beans with the noble parts of the pig, like the ear,
tail, tongue and ribs, and served the dish to the slaves. Little by little, feijoada was slipped into the menu of the fidalges and all of
the brazilians. Nowadays, besides the pork, feijoada is served with manioc flour.
Even though the black beans cooked with pork is the most traditional of the
feijoadas, several variation have been created in Brazil. In the North-East, for exampla, they use "roxinho" beans, besides using
vegetables like carrots, squash and cabbage.
But feijoada isn't the only traditional dish of Rio de Janeiro. The cariocas
have the habit of eating a lot of "galeto" which is a type of roasted chicken. The fowl that is used is a very young one, usually
not more than 30 days old and usually weighs less than one kilogram. One of the secrets to redish a good galeto is to pay attention to the
herbs and spices that were used to season it.
The saying guaranties that to get to know a country you have to try their
gastronomy. In Rio, the job will be at least delicious. |
