The National Library of Rio de Janeiro began in the Book Store of the Royal Censorial
Council, which was a governmental bureau responsible for the censor, in the middle age in Portugal. The collection was almost destroyed in the end
of the 18th century when Lisbon suffered an earthquake and practically destroyed all the books.
After this first tragedy, in the beginning of the 19th century, almost 60
thousand books crossed the ocean in direction of Brazil brought by the Royal Portuguese family which was fleeing from the troops of Napoleon. In the
country, the books formed the Royal Library and was always considered a priceless collection. As a matter of fact, during the period of the independence,
when the royal family returned to Portugal, the library was one of the items of the list of indemnities that the ex-colony had to pay.
For example, the National Library has a collection of more than a million pieces, just in
general pieces, where monographs and these can be found, where there are also around five thousand titles among dictionaries and encyclopedia for
consulting in the library.
The iconographic collection is one of the most complete ones of the country and includes
unique editions refering even to the European Architecture of the 19th century. The National Library has around 220 thousand erudite and popular
musical compositions of different periods. Another extremely important collection of the National Library is the principal newspapers and editions of
magazines. Now the file of rare pieces is formed of books, panphlets and periodicals, that include pieces from the 15th to the 20th
centuries.
