| Rio de Janeiro - Churches - Metropolitan Cathedral |
Beside of wonderful beaches, Rio de Janeiro also has nice churches. One of them
is the Metropolitan Cathedral. It was built in 1964, but only in 1979 it was inaugurated. The work was dedicated to São Sebastião and Sant'Ana,
patron saints. With a cone shape and exuberant stained glasses, the Metropolitan Cathedral is another one of the city’s postcards.
Adorned with high relief paintings, sculptures and several religious pieces, the
Cathedral also has images of the patron saints, both of them in the garden. What calls much attention are enormous transparent cross in the
rooftop and the colorful stained glasses that change colors according to the light. Right at the entrance there’s a bronze sculpture of Pope
João Paulo II.
The place has plenty of space and is well organized, with capacity to accommodate
20000 people. In the external part a campanile. In the basement of the cathedral you can find the Sacred Arts Museum. The patrimony is formed
by more than 4000 items and among them, the collection of the Pope’s objects stands out.
