| Rio de Janeiro - Churches - Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church |
The imponent construction located in the financial center of Rio de Janeiro is one
of the places that every tourist must visit. But those who think that the church always had that sumptuous look are making a huge mistake.
The actual church occupies the place of a small chapel raised in the beginning of
the 17th century. Captain Antônio Martins de Palma ordered the temple construction in gratitude to the goddess, since, according to the sailor,
he and his wife escaped from a shipwreck by the grace of the goddess. The today’s church was built only in 1775, almost one hundred years after
the chapel that was there previously.
Covered with marble of different colors, the church’s interior is decorated with
beautiful panels that illustrate stories of the life of saints and the origin of the church. The doors were made in France and have bronze
details. However, what stands out the most is the dome. More than 1400 lioz stones, from Portugal, compose the church’s dome, which weights
about 600 tons.
