| Rio de Janeiro - Churches - São Bento Monastery |
One of the biggest patrimonies of the brazilian colonial art, São Bento’s
Monastery has baroque images as precious as those found on the city of Ouro Preto, in Minas Gerais. Despite of the sober traces of the external
architecture, the church’s interior have a sumptuous decoration and many art works.
The monastery was built in the 17th century, when two monks arrived at Salvador
to found an abbey of their order in Rio de Janeiro. At the chosen terrain there was already a small chapel in the honor of Nossa Senhora da
Conceição, which was demolished for the work’s start, in 1633. The São Bento’s Monastery was completed in 1942 and all the church construction’s
workers were from the Benedictine Order.
