The National History Museum, located in Rio de Janeiro, has great importance to
Brazil’s cultural history. Former President Epitácio Pessoa was who determined its construction in 1922, but only in 1945 it became functional.
Running in three different buildings, the museum has an ample space with library
and exhibit areas thematically divided. The National History Museum was the first one to offer a course about museum’s exhibits in Brazil and
is known all around the world.
In the museum’s patrimony, there are approximately 300000 objects, like old pieces,
books, manuscripts, iconographic documents and rare works. The National History Museum has the biggest numismatic collection in Latin America.
Students and researchers have easy access to the files, which holds ancient documents about Brazil, and to the library, formed with various
national books.
The exhibits in the museum have many different themes and are separately presented.
However, all of them are related to Brazil’s history. The exhibit named “Memória do Estado Imperial” (Imperial State’s Memory) is one of the
museum’s standings by presenting the imperial period through artistic works.
