| Rio de Janeiro - Museums - National Fine Arts Museum |
Just the architecture of the Rio de Janeiro’s National Museum of Fine Arts already
impresses. Inspired in French constructions, like Paris’s Louvre, the museum is in the building of the National School of Fine Arts. Adolfo
Morales de Los Rios projected the eclectic style building and the museum was installed years after the founding of the school, in 1938.
About 15 thousand pieces integrates the patrimony, among paintings, sculptures and
pictures. It’s one of the brazilian institutions with most of the 19th century’s art objects, including works of Pedro Américo, Rodolfo Amoedo,
Almeida Júnior, Zeferino da Costa, Rodolfo Bernardelli and Eliseu Visconti. Among paintings of national artists it can be found names like
Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti, Lasar Segall and others. The international collection includes works of Boudin, Francesco Guardi,
Nicolas Antoine Taunay, Picasso and Jean Baptiste Debret.
Another standout of the museum is the collection of popular art, which deals with
cultural aspects of each region of the country, with images and furniture of different places. The library has 13000 items, including books and
multimedia material. Public may do consultations to the books in-loco and also lend some books.
